Limited resources and environmental pollution call for clean and sustainable energy economy. Research at ATREC is underway to develop environmentally friendly and economical hydrogen production materials and technologies essential for the hydrogen economy. The development of hydrogen-air fuel cells may have utility for applications such as electrical generators, transportation and electronic devices.
We have developed a series of promising Al-based alloys that produces hydrogen by splitting water and is economically competitive with conventional fuels. The alloys have very fast hydrogen generation rate and could have the potential to produce hydrogen on-demand. We are currently testing the materials in a prototype for comparison with conventional NaBH4-based fuel cell.
